Google leaks the “Nexus Q” ahead of I/O…but what is it?

This is, according to what The Verge found on Google Play, a device called the Nexus Q. But what could it be? According to the Google Play page, it is a “social streaming media player”.

It’s a unique device that appears to rely heavily on having an Android device at its heart. But if you do have such a robot in your pocket, you’ll be able to create playlists with your friends. It carries 16 gigs of onboard storage, and can connect in any number of ways:

  • Micro HDMI (Type D)
  • TOSLink Optical audio (S/PDIF)
  • 10/100BASE-T Ethernet (RJ45)
  • Micro AB USB (for service and support)
  • Banana jack speaker outputs

It’s a $300 device, so it’s not something that you’ll take lightly. But if you want to go all in on the Android ecosystem for your home entertainment, the Nexus X should be an interesting addition. What remains to be seen is how it will fare against other systems such as the Sonos, which aren’t so reliant on Android.
