Limiting spam is a crucial part of any email system, but unfortunately that sometimes means legitimate messages become lost in the fray.
Google wants to make it easier for companies to avoid having their messages marked as spam with its new Postmaster Tools for Gmail.
The tool allows ‘qualified’ high-volume senders to analyze their mass emails to find out which messages are being sent to spam and what sort reputation they have with recipients, as get some insight on delivery errors and feedback loops. Google says this will allow them to check on any mistakes and learn more about best emailing practices.
Gmail’s also revamping the spam filter on the end-user side. It’s now implementing machine learning to detect and block spam trying to pass off as wanted mail; Google says it’s smart enough to weed out phishing scams.
The new filter will also be able to learn what kind of emails you like to read based on your habits. While you might like reading newsletters, for instance, someone else might see it as spam – the new filter will be able to adapt to you.
It’s a small change that most users won’t even notice, but that helps get rid of more spam is welcome.
