Giving away free stuff or stuff you don’t want, can be more trouble than it’s worth. Sometimes, to escape the dilemma, you’ll hand it over to a local charity shop, the next friend that walks through the door or maybe even post it on Gumtree or Craigslist.
One interesting startup that’s aiming to cater to the dilemma is Listia, born out of the Y Combinator camp. The company launched late last year and is designed to be a smart and simple way to give away free stuff.
Listia uses a points based system and determines who you give your item away to by the the person who wants it the most – that’s the person who is willing to use the most points up.
Listia gives you credits/points when you sign up and lets you earn more when you give things away via ‘auction’. You can also earn more points by referring friends or by buying them, which is where Listia makes it’s money. Charities also fit into the picture by earning 60% of all money paid.
In its simplest form, Listia is a really cool way to give items away for free and potentially do some good in the process. On the other hand, if you’re an Ebay addict or a bargain hunter, Listia might just become your new abode…it’s amazing what you’ll find on there:
