Facebook’s ephemeral messaging app Slingshot is now available globally

Facebook’s ephemeral messaging app Slingshot is now available globally

Facebook has today announced that its experimental Slingshot app for Android and iOS is now available to download worldwide.

The app first launched in the US last week, but Facebook is already opening it up to all markets, it confirmed in a blog post today.

Although it’s a little unusual to see Facebook move so fast to expand features out to new territories – they tend to get a longer test period as US-only exclusives, Facebook Paper, for example is still not officially available elsewhere – it comes in response to disappointment from users that they could not try out the new service. Including TNW’s Editor in Chief’s own disappointment that he could not test out the new app.

Plus, it makes sense to get international feedback on new services, rather than just having a US-centric view.

As well as allowing you to send images or messages as they are, the app also allows you to add notes or doodles over the top of the content that you are sharing.  In order to see an image or photo sent by a friend, you have to send one of your own. Fair’s fair.

Created out a Facebook Creative Labs hackathon last December, Slingshot is Facebook’s attempt to get into the ephemeral messaging game and compete with apps like Snapchat and Fuse.
