Facebook tweaks Newsfeed to give more love to Live Video

Facebook has been spending plenty of time on itsLive Video offering — working diligently to better showcase it on both desktop and mobile Web, as well as creating a VR opportunity with its Live 360 Video technology. Today, the company announced via blog post that you’ll likely be seeing more Live Videos as they happen on your Newsfeed.

The change is based on relevant feedback from the launch of the technology:

Now that more and more people are watching Live videos, we are considering Live Videos as a new content type – different from normal videos – and learning how to rank them for people in News Feed. As a first step, we are making a small update to News Feed so that Facebook Live videos are more likely to appear higher in News Feed when those videos are actually live, compared to after they are no longer live.

Users spend triple the amount of time watching a Live video than a video that’s no longer live, which indicates how much people are enthralled by the broadcasting novelty.

It’s a move that is more housekeeping than anything else, but likely a part of Facebook’s long game to become a place where people have real-time interactions, rather than just dumping their new baby and puppy photos at regular intervals.
