Facebook Blocked In Pakistan Due to “Draw Mohammad Day” Group

According to OpenNet, “Pakistani high court has ordered the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block Facebook until May 31.”

This is in response to a Facebook group that supports “Draw Mohammad Day” on May 20th. OpenNet also states that, “the individual page has also been blocked in the UAE [United Arab Emirates], and calls have been made in other countries for government authorities to block the group, or Facebook in its entirety.”

Apparently the “movement” started after Comedy Central’s South Park decided to not have a cartoon depiction of Mohammad on the show. In response, a cartoonist came up with the “Draw Mohammad Day” idea as a way to support free speech (again, we’re just relating the news here, not editorializing).

We’ll continue to monitor this story and relay any updates.
