Glancee, one of the location-aware apps that had everyone talking at SXSW has been acquired by Facebook, according to the company.

Here’s what Glancee had to say on its site today:

We started Glancee in 2010 with the goal of bringing together the best of your physical and digital worlds. We wanted to make it easy to discover the hidden connections around you, and to meet interesting people. Since then Glancee has connected thousands of people, empowering serendipity and pioneering social discovery.

We are therefore very excited to announce that Facebook has acquired Glancee and that we have joined the team in Menlo Park to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users. We’ve had such a blast connecting people through Glancee, and we truly thank our users for being a part of the Glancee community.

It appears as if the service will shut down, as the team offers a way to download your data from the site.

Glancee allowed you to discover people around you, but the product never really took off. The team will be joining Facebook to work on other products that rely on location, I’m sure. Perhaps it can help the social network come up with technology that doesn’t drain your battery when you use a location app like Glancee.

Facebook’s been busy this year, adding yet another hungry startup to the ranks of the company. Along with Glancee, Facebook has acquired Instagram and Gowalla in recent months.
