Dropbox updates license following IP controversy

Dropbox updates license following IP controversy

Dropbox reports that, after gathering feedback from users following last week’s announcement of a Terms of Service revision, it has clarified the wording on intellectual property licensing.

User feedback suggested that the wording was previously to vague, suggesting that Dropbox may exercise rights beyond what is needed to operate the service. Such feedback stems from a climate where controversy over similar licenses from photo-sharing applications is still fresh.

The new license wording is casual and clear, and the most important addition are the words: “to the extent reasonably necessary for the Service. This license is solely to enable us to technically administer, display, and operate the Services.”

This move by Dropbox should be taken as an example by other web app companies on how to deal with user information, without restricting the ability of those companies to provide a service.
