Things are not looking good for Uber’s Delhi presence. The company’s license application has been rejected by the Delhi government, with the city’s Transport Department citing that Uber failed to declare that it was complying with the conditions set after its month-long ban last December.
Uber was banned in the Indian capital after an Uber driver allegedly raped a female passenger. Other on-demand taxi apps were also denied licenses to operate, including Mumbai-based OlaCabs and Taxi4Sure.
Uber stated in a blog post earlier this year that it was implementing a more strict background check system to ensure the safety of its passengers. Under the new system, only drivers whose police clearances have been re-verified in the past six weeks would be allowed on the road.
However, just last weekend, another female passenger claimed to have been sexually harassed by an Uber driver in Delhi.
Uber has not yet commented on its license application rejection.
