With less than 24 hours to go to grandfather yourself into AT&T’s disappearing unlimited data plan, this article points out another monkey wrench that AT&T is throwing at current iPhone users: if you want that $20 (official) tethering option, you’ll have to give up your current unlimited plan and switch to the 2GB plan.
Annoyed? Well, you should be. First of all, tethering is something that should have happened years ago. Secondly, if you do go with tethering (and drop your unlimited plan) that $20 extra a month doesn’t give you any extra bandwidth. With AT&T no longer selling iPhone 3G/3Gs, scrapping their unlimited plans, and this news, obviously AT&T is doing everything that it can to get as many of its current customers off of their unlimited plans as possible.
Frankly, it seems only a matter of time (January 1, 2011 perhaps?) that AT&T will take the inevitable final step and simply cut off all unlimited plans. At the very least, it seems likely that they would at least do this for renewals.
