A couple of days ago BlackBerry issued a pretty low-key update to the BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system, but there’s a problem – a number of users are reporting that the tweak has wiped all of their text messages and account passwords.
A quick search on Twitter shows that a number of BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 owners have encountered the problem:
So the #BB10 software update deleted all my text messages and my account information. Great… #fb

Spotted by The Verge (via N4BB), the problem varies between users. Some have lost all of their messages and SMS functionality – including the ability to send new messages – while others can see their texts but are unable to view the remainder of the message thread.
It’s unclear at this stage how widespread the problem is and what part of the update has triggered it among BlackBerry 10 device owners.
The BlackBerry 10.1 update includes a number of tweaks to the BlackBerry Hub, including the ability to quickly move between messages without returning to the message list, as well as some updates to BlackBerry World and BlackBerry Balance.
TNW has reached out to BlackBerry to clarify the issue and will update this post if and when they respond.
Update:
A spokesperson for BlackBerry told TNW: “A small number of customers have reported an issue with their SMS message history after updating to BlackBerry 10.1 MR. We are currently investigating the issue.”
