Apple killed and switched all its ports over to Thunderbolt 3 the new MacBook Pros – except, ironically, the headphone jack – so now pretty much everyone has to connect their external devices via a dongle. Even your iPhone.
It seems people have complained enough for Apple to take note, and the company has dropped the price of all it’s USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 adapters:
“We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition. We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem. Through the end of the year, we are reducing prices on all USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 peripherals we sell, as well as the prices on Apple’s USB-C adapters and cables.”
The only things without a discount are USB-C charging cables.
That’s an unusual move for a company that’s known for spearheading new standards without regard for how the world will catch up, but very much welcome. Here are all the new adapter prices:
- USB-C to USB A: $9 (from 19)
- Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2: $29 (from $49)
- USB-C to Lightning (1 meter) from $25 to $19
- USB-C to Lightning (2 meters) $29 (from 35)
- HDMI, USB, and USB-C multi-adapter: $49 (from $69)
- VGA, USB, and USB-C multi-adapter: $49 (from $69)
- USB-C to SD adapter: $29 (from $49)
- 25 percent off all other third party USB-C peripherals
Granted, you can still probably buy cheaper accessories elsewhere, but it’s a nice gesture from a company that can often be seen as cold toward its consumer’s desires.
