During the company’s earnings call, Apple’s CFO Peter Oppenheimer announced that its newest operating system, Mac OS X Lion, would be launching tomorrow. This confirms the rumors that have been swirling over the last few days.
OS X Lion is an extensive upgrade to Apple’s OS X operating system, bringing sweeping changes across the OS. The addition of features like full-screen applications, Launchpad and extensive gesture support have led many to make correlations between Apple’s iOS and OS X platforms. This has sparked rumors that Apple could be merging these two into one at some point in the future.
Over 250 new features were introduced in OS X Lion, with many of them polishing the standard features of the OS. Apple has also introduced a bevy of new API’s for developers, allowing them to take advantage of safety and stability enhancements like application sandboxing, versioning and auto-restore of application states. Many of these are being applied to applications by developers now.
The Next Web has taken an in-depth look at OS X Lion over the last several weeks and our review will be available tomorrow. Please do check back to get the full story on Apple’s latest ‘big cat’.
Mac OS X Lion will be offered exclusively from the Mac App Store at a price of $29.99.
