[Updated, from Google] Apps go missing from the Android Market.

[Updated:  See statement at end of post.]

First off, we’ve reached out to Google to try to get some clarification for what’s going on.

The story is a few days in the making, but it’s really starting to come to light today due to an article on Read Write Web.

It seems that, over the past week, applications are coming up missing in the Android Market and there has not yet been any response as to why.  Our running bet is on a code glitch, but as I said, we’re waiting to hear back from Google.

As the story goes, recently-updated applications are disappearing, and nobody seems to know why.  What makes it even more confusing is that it seems to only be happening to users browsing the Android Market on 2.0 or 2.1 enabled phones.

If this were the Apple App Store, the randomly disappearing apps might make a bit more sense.  They could be pulled due to any number of reasons, or their approval might be revoked due to fresh issues.  However, the Android Market touts its lack of an approval process, and so this Houdini act remains elusive.

As of yet, Google has not publicly addressed the issue.  But we’ll remain in contact with Google, and hopefully have some information to you soon.

According to the Android Developers Blog:

“Recently we became aware that some Android applications were not visible on the Android Market. While we were internally troubleshooting and qualifying the fix and communicating with our hardware partners, developers were trying hard to get our help through various technical support sites. Regrettably, we fell short of our own standard for customer support by not communicating the issue to our developers and how we were working to resolve it.

We’re pleased to say that the issue looks to be resolved with a patch, and to our best knowledge, all apps that were previously impacted are up and visible again. Again, apologies for the delay and inconvenience this created.”
