AMD teams up with Eric Trump-backed Foundation to build humanoid robots

AMD has spent the year trying to prove it can do more than trail Nvidia. Its latest move takes the fight somewhere new, to the inside of a humanoid robot.

The chipmaker has agreed to supply the compute for machines built by Foundation, a San Francisco startup whose backers include Eric Trump. For a company long cast as the perennial number two in AI silicon, the choice of battleground is pointed.

The company is not a conventional robotics outfit. Its Phantom machines have been tested in Ukraine, and Foundation has since won Pentagon contracts to develop humanoid robots for the US military. Heavy industry and the battlefield are, in its telling, the same market.

Under the deal, announced on July 23, Foundation’s robots will run on AMD’s Ryzen AI Embedded X100 Series processors, the embedded chips the company introduced in January. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Eric Trump has been an investor in Foundation since early 2026 and serves as its chief strategy adviser. He and his brother Donald Trump Jr. have backed a string of defence and hardware firms, among them the Israeli drone-maker XTEND, Unusual Machines, and Powerus.

The pattern has drawn scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest, given how often such firms compete for government work while a family member sits in the White House.

Foundation’s defence business has moved quickly regardless, from battlefield trials to procurement talks in a matter of months.

Foundation says its first-generation Phantom MK-1 robots helped build more than 24,000 cars in 2025 and now run five days a week inside customer deployments, a level of uptime few humanoid makers can yet claim.

It puts its contracted annual recurring revenue, the figure it has signed rather than banked, at $100 million.

Leasing an industrial unit costs roughly $100,000 a year, while a defence version, fitted for materials handling and reconnaissance, runs to $300,000 apiece.

The next model, the Phantom MK-2, has been engineered around AMD silicon from the start, hardened for factory floors and combat alike.

Foundation says the machine tolerates 100G of vibration, carries an IP67 dust and water rating, and sees in 360 degrees, the kind of specification sheet written for a warehouse and a war zone in equal measure.

It also describes itself as the only company building dual-use humanoids for both heavy industry and defence, a claim that is difficult to test against a field of rivals making similar noises.

Much of the appeal lies in the hands. AMD’s programmable FPGA chips, inherited from its Xilinx acquisition, let Foundation coordinate 23 degrees of freedom while folding in high-frequency tactile feedback, according to the company’s Andrea Esposito, in “a single deterministic control loop”.

The broader deal pulls in AMD’s CPUs, graphics, and adaptive computing to run perception, reasoning, and motor control on the same platform.

For AMD, the prize is a foothold in a market Nvidia has quietly made its own through its Jetson edge modules and Isaac simulation software, which a long list of robotics startups already lean on.

“Advanced humanoid robots require tightly coordinated compute across perception, reasoning and real-time control,” said Salil Raje, an AMD senior vice-president.

The company claims its chip delivers 2.5 times faster inference and 3 times faster training than Nvidia’s, though it has not published the benchmarks, the methodology, or the rival parts behind those figures.

The wager is on scale. Foundation plans to open a factory in October capable of building 5,000 robots a year, with a second site planned for early next year and designed for 50,000.

Neither company disclosed how many chips the deal covers or what it is worth. Money is pouring into the field elsewhere, from a $1.4 billion round for Germany’s NEURA Robotics to a crowded pack of Chinese manufacturers now facing a commercialisation reckoning.

Whether AMD has bet on the right robot, or merely the best-connected one, will take longer to settle.
