As bans lift, Uber launches its experimental taxi cab option in Boston

Following Uber‘s ban in Boston (and the later reversal of that ban), the transportation startup isn’t going to make any new friends with today’s move: the company is launching support for taxis, which will join its usual lineup of black cars and SUVs.

If you aren’t already familiar with Uber’s recent integration with city taxi cabs, an experiment that has already launched in cities like NY, the option simply lets Uber users call a cab and pay for the fare directly through the app. According to Uber, the company understands “that not every occasion calls for a black car.” The cheaper price point of a standard city cab explains why this move was necessary.

Although the new taxi option coexists right next to Uber’s standard black cars and SUVs, the startup was quick to note that taxis are only intended for “adventurous Uberers only,” as the service is still an experiment in the “Uber Garage.”
