While it was previously rumored that Sony’s upcoming flagship ‘Honami’ smartphone would be capable of shooting 4K video, it seems that Acer has pipped the tech titan at the post, by officially unveiling its very own 4K mobile rocket.

With the 2013 IFA consumer tech exhibition about to kick off in Berlin, Acer has chosen to announce the device in advance, probably because it doesn’t want the news to get lost in the malaise.

The Liquid S2 is a full HD 6″ smartphone (or ‘phablet’), with IPS technology, 4K video-recording and 4G LTE. With 4K, this basically brings four times the resolution of standard HD, and is certainly a novel feature in a smartphone.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but it will be available from the end of October.
