500px splits its photo marketplace into two tiers, targeting a range of buyers

500px, the photo community specializing in discovering, sharing, buying and selling photography, has been super busy lately rolling out updates to their apps and services. Today it is 500px Marketplace’s turn for a revamp, with the launch of two new collections: Prime and Core.

Stating in its blog that it has “officially outgrown the one price fits all” model, 500px is seeking to better serve the 150,000 photographers who sell their work through the service by splitting up the collection.

The Prime collection features a “highly curated selection of the most unique and engaging imagery in the marketplace,” chosen by the company’s team of experienced content editors. Photos are sold at a premium to target large publishers, advertising agencies and tech companies with prices ranging from $50 to $750.

The Core collection offers a selection of photos captured with any camera, including mobile devices. With its lower price range of $35 to $300, the collection gives a wider range of buyers access to 500px royalty-free imagery.

500px says that curations are subject to change based on seasonality, aesthetic trends, multiple reviews and audits. The point is to get photos in front of the right audience for maximum sales.

Regardless of the collection, photographers will still make 70 percent of net on every license sold, the company said.
