1Password goes freemium for iOS 8, supports Touch ID, Safari integration, and more

1Password goes freemium for iOS 8, supports Touch ID, Safari integration, and more

Popular password-management software 1Password has joined the legions of iOS 8 app updates today with version 5.0 hitting the App Store with a slew of notable features.

However, perhaps more notable is that 1Password is now adopting a freemium model, as with its version over on Android. Rather than charging $18 up front to download, a price that was halved in the wake of the recent Heartbleed security debacle, the app is now free.

Of course, the monetization model has simply switched more towards in-app purchases. Free users can create and edit Logins, Credit Cards, Identities, and Secure Notes, as well as syncing with the service across other platforms. A Pro upgrade of $9.99 then unlocks all category types (e.g. ‘Software Licenses’), Multiple Vaults, Custom Organization, custom fields, among other things.

It’s worth noting here that existing 1Password 4 users will receive version 5 (and the associated Pro features) without paying anything extra.

1Password 5 for iOS 8 comes replete with Touch ID (unlock with your finger), direct Safari integration (yay!), App Extensions, Wi-Fi Sync with attachments, and other enhancements.

1Password 5 will be available alongside the launch of iOS 8 today.
