Amazon greenlights six original TV shows and renews Alpha House for a second season

Amazon today unveiled a slate of new original TV shows headed to Prime Instant Video, as well as a second season for its political comedy Alpha House.

The debutantes moving forward from its latest pilot season include mystery thriller The After, detective noir Bosch and Mozart in the Jungle, a new comedy-drama which promises a unique cocktail of “sex, drugs and classical music”.

The final three are Transparent and two children’s TV shows called Wishenproof and Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street. They’ll follow fellow kids series Creative Galaxy, Tumble Leaf and Annedroids, which have already been ordered for a summer release. As promised, Amazon will be shooing all of its new shows in 4K, otherwise known as UltraHD. The company is yet to confirm whether this resolution will be added as a streaming option to Prime Instant Video, however.

Alpha House has also been renewed for a sophomore season, following an 11-episode run that ended in January this year. Cast members John Goodman, Mark Consuelos, Clark Johnson and Matt Malloy will all reprise their roles as Republican Senators living together in Washington. Amazon said production of the show will begin this summer.

All of the new shows will be available exclusive under Prime Instant Video, is on-demand movie and TV streaming service. Similar to Netflix, Amazon is backing original content as a means to bring in new subscribers. The company is expected to announced a streaming device of some description later this week, so the timing couldn’t be better.
