Twitter introduces Audio Cards so you can listen to music directly from your timeline

Today, Twitter announced that it is introducing a new type of card onto your timeline, the Audio Card. As expected from the name, the new tool lets you listen to music and podcasts directly from your timeline on both Android and iOS devices.

You can even dock the cards to continue listening to music as you browse Twitter, similar to what SoundCloud does. It also just so happens SoundCloud is Twitter’s first streaming partner.

The companies note the first Audio Cards will be shared by a small group of partners, including NASA, David Guetta, the White House and others. In the coming weeks, they will be made available to anyone who has music on SoundCloud.

The new addition should make it easier for musicians and personalities to share their audio, while also streamlining the Twitter app experience – you needn’t open up your browser app just to listen to new music from your favorite artists.

Update: Hardly an hour after their first announcement, Twitter has just named iTunes as their second streaming partner. Now when you listen to music from select artists on Twitter, you’ll be able to order from iTunes with a couple of taps.

The Foo Fighters are the first iTunes group to use the new Audio Card, tweeting the official release of their newest single.

We’ll keep an eye out for any new partners Twitter adds to the streaming party.
