BitTorrent and uTorrent mobile apps on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone pass 20 million downloads

BitTorrent and uTorrent mobile apps on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone pass 20 million downloads

BitTorrent on Thursday announced it had passed 20 million mobile downloads across its Android, iOS, and Windows Phone apps. The milestone comes just over four months after the 10 million download milestone, meaning not only is there continuous growth, but it is accelerating.

BitTorrent currently offers eight mobile products: uTorrent/BitTorrent for Android, uTorrent/BitTorrent Remote for Android, uTorrent Remote/BitTorrent Remote for iOS (Web app), and uTorrent Remote/BitTorrent Remote for Windows Phone.

Unlike last time, BitTorrent didn’t break down the larger figure. The company did tell us, however, that the client apps are being downloaded the most. That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given that they have more functionality.

The company also shared that it currently has two apps in the top 20 free media and video section of the US Google Play store: the µTorrent Beta app at number 6 and the BitTorrent App at number 20. The µTorrent beta app is also in the top five free media and video section in 16 countries and is also listed in the top 10 for 27 countries.

While Remote is available for iOS and Windows Phone, there’s no talk about a full client coming to either OS. The former group is, however, slightly less lucky than the latter group: if you have an iPhone, an iPad, or an iPod touch, you might as well forget about it. There are many BitTorrent clients and BitTorrent remote clients for iOS, but Apple doesn’t let any of them into its App Store. BitTorrent has yet to announce a Windows Phone app, but at least it’s a possibility.

Unlike the Remote apps, Android has a full-fledged client (no computer required), with a slight caveat. “We’re still in Beta. Your feedback and ideas will help us build something (even more) awesome.” We’ll let you know when that changes.
