Matthew Glotzbach, Google Enterprise Product Management Director, just posted a plea to existing Microsoft Office users the day before Office 2010 launches, that basically goes like this: Office 2010 is expensive and pointless, so upgrade with us instead.
Other than actually typing “nah, nah, nah, nah!” the post pretty much sounds like a spurned child trying to get the attention of the adults in the room. Here’s an excerpt:
…upgrade means what it’s supposed to mean: effortless, affordable, and delivering a remarkable increase in employee productivity. This is a refreshing alternative to the expensive and laborious upgrades to which IT professionals have become accustomed.
Of course, the post goes onto list all of the great cloud computing features of Google Docs and that it works with Office formats (one great line from the post: “Of course, you probably already own Office 2003 or 2007 (or maybe Office 2000?)”).
That said, if Google Docs really wants to be taken seriously in the very serious enterprise world, this kind of messaging isn’t the way to go.
