Facebook’s #FriendsDay is about to ruin your Newsfeed with cheesy videos

Facebook’s #FriendsDay is about to ruin your Newsfeed with cheesy videos

Facebook is again celebrating ‘Friends Day,’ a made-up holiday that sees people around the world gleefully sharing algorithmically-made videos while others hide out on Twitter until it’s all over.

We get it. The best way to celebrate your friends is to chase them off Facebook until this is all over. And this year, we get to start two days early — color me excited. If you haven’t seen it yet on your feed here’s the video in full:

The holiday is traditionally celebrated on the fourth of February, which is the date Facebook was founded way back in 2004. It’s unclear, though, why Facebook decided to start celebrating two days earlier this year.

Perhaps it’s because Friend’s Day is supposed to be more than just a celebration of Facebook’s birthday. In 2015, CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote:

[Friends Day is a] day to celebrate friends. It’s also Facebook’s birthday, but today isn’t about celebrating us. It’s about friendship.

Also, the Super Bowl on the Sunday the 5th, so perhaps Facebook didn’t want its celebration to be overshadowed.

Last year, the first Friend’s Day video was born, a stitched-together video detailing happy times with friends, relatives, and that dude you drunk-added at a bar making a surprise appearance in your special video. So as before, you’ll be stuck toughing it out with cheesy videos full of people you probably haven’t talked to in years for the next few days. Suck it up; it’s Friends Day.

If you absolutely must share these videos, at least check out the Friends Day Page where you can edit the images to something a little more favorable than that time you got drunk in Cabo and posed with a sombrero in front of Señor Frogs.

Seriously, have some self-respect.

Update 9:00 AM ET:

This year, Messenger is also getting a bit of Friend’s Day love too. The app will highlight friendship-themed GIFs to help you start conversations with the people you care about, or catch up with that one friend you haven’t talked to in two years.
