Tencent launches Kik-like messaging app in China

Tencent, China’s largest and most used Internet service portal, launches a free Kik-like messaging app in China called “微信” or “micro-letters.”

Micro-letters (loosely translated, but let’s call it that for our reader’s sake) is a free-to-download and use app for the iPhone. The website says that the Android and the Symbian versions will be released “in the near future.”

Similar to Kik, it lets the users search their contacts for other micro-letters users and they will automatically be added to your buddy list. It can also show real-time typing and delivery status.

It has, however, a unique function which is photo sharing. It can be accessed through Wi-Fi and GPRS using Tencent’s unique communication network that is optimized for minimal data consumption.

You can download it from their website by clicking on this link.
