Tea: The app for serious tea-drinkers now features an encyclopedia of your favorite brews

Tea might just be the ultimate app for consumers of the aromatic beverage of the same name.

Launched back in 2011, Tea for iOS has served as a centralized repository for seasoned tea-drinkers to store their top teas, tasting notes and even tweak their teas to create the perfect blend. With the latest update, however, Tea 2.0 has added a neat new encyclopedia feature to teach budding brewers all about their favorite leaves.

Tea for two

If you’re new to Tea (the app), here’s a quick peek at the basics. You start with a blank slate, which you add to over time by adding in the names, brands and types of tea you consume.

You can even set a timer for your tea to brew, based on the exact kind of tea you’re attempting to create. The timer even remembers your favorite brew times for each of your teas.

With version 2.0, however, an integrated encyclopedia lets users learn about the teas, providing maps of regions where they’re grown, the methods that make them, harvest season, and so on.

Tea can now recognize more than 500 tea names, and can match search terms with nicknames and alternate spellings, which should help you nail down the exact tea you’re looking for.

It’s a really nicely put together app, and is the handiwork of Samuel Iglesias, a developer who recently joined Nest as an iOS app engineer. He also tells us he got a little bit of help from Mac Tyler for the design too, before Tyler started working at Facebook on its Home product.

So, if you’re serious about your tea, Tea might just be worth your $1.99. Version 2.0 is available to download from the App Store now.
