I hope you’re not tiring of iPhone 8 rumors yet, because the mill isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Today, The Wall Street Journal reported that the next iPhone will feature a curved OLED display, similar to those seen on Samsung’s Galaxy Edge handsets.
This builds on speculation from Barclays analysts that we first heard in November 2016; The WSJ also noted that Apple is expected to launch three models this year, of which one will feature an OLED screen and the other two will be equipped with standard LCDs.
Of course, that might well drive up the price beyond the $1,000 point – higher than the $969 tag on the top-end 256GB iPhone 7 Plus.
The new displays will almost certainly be sourced from Samsung, which is perhaps the only manufacturer capable of delivering the sizable shipment that Apple needs; the companies have reportedly inked a deal to source 160 million OLED screens for the next iPhone. Former Apple supplier JDI just showed off its own flexible screen last month, but it noted that won’t begin mass production before 2018.
If all the rumors we’ve heard so far are to be believed, Apple will have an absolute cracker of a phone to show off this year. It’s said to feature wireless charging, an iris scanner, a new front camera for ‘3D selfies’, augmented reality features and an all-glass design with a steel frame.
