Apple just wrapped up its iPhone event at its headquarters in Cupertino, CA. Here’s a list of everything the company announced:
iPhone 5s: A7 processor, better camera, Touch ID
The iPhone5s will come in slate, gold and silver. It features a new A7 chip that Apple is touting as the first smartphone to run in 64-bit. The device will cost $199 for the 16GB with a two-year contract.
The phone goes on sale on September 20th in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and the UK.
Apple has made the iPhone 5s twice as fast overall. The CPU performance of Apple’s latest is 40 times as fast as the original iPhone, while graphics performance is 56 times as fast.
The rear camera on the iPhone 5s goes down to f2.2 aperture with a 15% larger active sensor area. The device’s camera flash now has two LEDs that will automatically adjust to the lighting in a room. Photos can be recorded in bursts of 10 per second and video goes up to 120 frames-per-second slow motion.
The iPhone 5s comes with Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the home button that keeps your phone secure. Fingerprint authentication can be used to unlock the phone and make iTunes and App Store purchases.
Apple has also included an M7 chip to work with its A7 silicon. The M7 is a motion coprocessor that tracks the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. The new chip will be handy for health and fitness apps. Nike is releasing a Nike+ Move app to take advantage of the new processor.
Showcasing the power of the new iPhone, Epic Games announced Infinity Blade III, which will run in 64-bit and arrive in the App Store alongside the iPhone 5s.
Instead of lowering the price of the iPhone 5, Apple has replaced it with the iPhone 5c, which will cost $99 for the 16GB version and $199 for the 32GB on a two-year contract. The new iPhone resembles the iPhone 5, but with a colorful plastic back that comes in blue, white, pink, yellow and green.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 5c begin on September 13th and the device will go on sale alongside the iPhone 5s on September 20th.
The iPhone 5c has a higher capacity battery than the iPhone 5 and an improved FaceTime camera.
Apple has also created a $29 silicon rubber case for the device with cutouts to show off its color.
New iOS devices will now include iMovie, iPhoto and the iWork suite (Keynote, Pages and Numbers) for free. During setup, users will have the option to download the apps.
Apple is giving iOS a massive visual overhaul with version 7. To go with the new flat design, Apple is adding a control center, multitasking cards. The firm is also releasing its iTunes Radio service on iOS 7.
Apple will release iOS 7 on September 18th for the iPhone 4 and later, the iPad 2 and later, the iPad mini and the 5th generation iPod touch.
Apple announced that it will ship its 700 millionth iOS device next month.
