“Memes are serious business” – A chat with LOLcats expert Kate Miltner

“Memes are serious business” – A chat with LOLcats expert Kate Miltner

Kate Miltner‘s most prominent claim to fame is penning her masters dissertation at the London School of Economics on LOLcats and other popular Internet memes.

You can download it here (PDF) if you’re interested in reading it.

Nowadays, Miltner works as lead planner at Jam @ Engine, but she also still loves memes with a passion, so much so that she traveled to Sweden to talk about them at the Media Evolution conference.

Errrhmargerrrd, we thought, we need to catch up with this lady.

So I did, and we talked about Internet memes and why so many of them have spread like wildfire in the past few years. Miltner also explains why they’re not just silly and ‘low-culture’ and admits that she once dressed up as a LOLcat back in 2008.
