Twitter opens its advertising doors to small businesses in the UK, Ireland and Canada

Twitter today announced that small- and medium-sized businesses in the UK, Ireland and Canada will now be able to make use of its self-serve advertising platform.

Twitter’s suite of ad products include Promoted Tweets, Promoted Accounts, and Promoted Trends.

All a small business owner needs is a Twitter account and a credit card to start advertising. Notably, Twitter says it will only charge when people follow your Promoted Account or retweet, reply, favorite or click on your Promoted Tweets, and never for organic Twitter activity.

What’s more, Twitter is also partnering with O2 Business to teach small businesses in the UK how to use Twitter more effectively to engage with their audience. This means O2 will be giving small businesses Twitter resources and support that includes Twitter guides with case studies, online education sessions, and most crucial of all — credit to spend on Twitter ads via the self-serve platform.

Twitter built its self-serve advertising platform last March, and opened it up to all users in the US in April this year.

Previously, all businesses outside of the US had to liaise with Twitter in order to put up ads, which limited the social network’s reach. With Twitter’s latest move, it is expected that more small businesses will now sign on to place ads on the network, boosting its revenue streams.

As Twitter just listed on the New York Stock Exchange recently, it is pertinent for the company to show investors how it can continue attracting advertisers to the platform. Finetuning its ad products and making them more widely available is key to Twitter’s efforts, and additional revenue will greatly help to boost its share price.
