It’s not often that I feel the need to highlight a TV advert. They are, after all, just another piece of marketing designed to sell a specific product to the masses. Occasionally though, an advert will make my jaw drop.
This latest advert from Sony, promoting its new 55-inch and 65-inch X9 4K televisions, is one of them.
The piece shows millions of brightly-colored petals – estimated to be 8 million, in fact – erupting from a volcano in Costa Rica and flowing uncontrollably into a nearby mountain village. If you watch this in 1080p on YouTube, I guarantee that you’ll be mesmerized from start to finish.
If you’re interested to know how the advert was conceived and choreographed, there’s also an insightful ‘behind the scenes’ video to check out:
Why 8 million petals? Well, there are 8 million individual pixels in Sony’s new 4K screens, of course.
An advert like this is even more profound when you consider that none of it was created artificially with computer graphics. It’s completely real. Rather like this iconic Bravia advert, which shot thousands of colorful rubber balls down a street in San Francisco, it has an impact that is both immediate and long-lasting.
Bravo, Sony.
