Tyree Callahan, a Washington-based artist, has turned a vintage typewriter into a new artistic medium. He replaced the keys on the 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter with colours instead of letters.

The Chromatic Typewriter is a fascinating experiment in how to create art. While you might not have complete control over how the final image looks, who wouldn’t want to type up a painting on a vintage typewriter?

While typewriters can be used to paint a picture with words, Tyree’s typewriter can literally be used to paint.

The typewriter is also up for the 2012 West Prize, and you can vote for his entry here.
