“Unfriend” declared the word of the year

“Unfriend” declared the word of the year

Every year the New Oxford American Dictionary makes a special announcement to declare the word of the year.

The 2009 word of the year is social media related. It is “unfriend”.

As the OUP blog explains “unfriend” means “to remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook”.

Funny, isn’t it. Especially when you think how everyone is crazy about followers count, number of friends, etc.

Other words considered this year include hashtag, netbook, fremium and my personal favorite “intexticated – distracted because texting on a cellphone while driving a vehicle”.
