DJ Earworm’s annual mashup reminds us that 2016 was godawful

There are few things we look forward to more than DJ Earworm’s annual mashup. Through carefully chosen lyrics and placement, this year’s ‘United States of Pop’ — the orgasmic recap of the year’s hits coupled with intricately-edited video — reminds all of us that 2016 was definitely one to forget.

Starting with a line from The Weeknd — “the whole year put us in the worst mood’ — and ending with one from The Chainsmokers — “I can’t stop” — the melodic tangling weaves its way through all of the best 2016 had to offer, 25 songs in total. Along the way we’re met with familiar favorites, like Sia, Rhianna, and Drake, as well as newcomers that put their stamp on 2016 in a big way like Rae Sremmurd, The Chainsmokers, and D.R.A.M.

This year’s take on the year in pop feels a bit more frenetic than its slower-moving predecessor from 2015, but two sides of the same coin still equal money, right? As always, The United States of Pop was worth waiting for and we tip our hats to DJ Earworm for the work he put in.

Also, thanks for reminding us that it’s almost over.
