Rovio’s latest title in the smash hit Angry Birds franchise — Angry Birds Space — has been downloaded more than 10 million times on all platforms in less than three days, the company has revealed.

The company noted the milestone in a tweet:

Launching on Thursday morning across iOS, Android, PC and Mac app stores, the game incorporates new characters and a new physics engine, as the game has been transported to an environment that requires you to use the gravitational pull of the planets to successfully complete each level.

Rovio has added a new power-up called Space Eagles, which is awarded for progressing throughout the game or can be bought via an in-app purchase. You will be able play 60 levels on first download, with more coming via game updates.

Rovio’s ‘Mighty Eagle’ Peter Vesterbacka noted on launch day that Rovio would not be launching Angry Birds Space on Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, delivering a blow to Nokia smartphone owners at the time.

However, in a stunning about-turn a day later, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said that the company was working on porting it to the Microsoft platform telling Reuters: “We are working towards getting Angry Birds Space to WP7.”

Vesterbacka was originally quoted as saying that the OS would take “big undertaking to support”, adding that “you have to completely rewrite the application.”

It’s a huge launch for Rovio, one that saw the company launch titles across the most popular marketplaces on smartphones and on the desktop. The company didn’t disclose the platforms on which the game was most popular.

Roughly speaking, the company may have sold as many as 28 copies per second over the past three days — astonishing.
