Owners of the new Nexus One, the Google Phone, are about to get an over the air update that will make their day brighter, and put a spring in their step.
That’s right, multi-touch is finally coming to Android. Starting with this update, Google is bringing “Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications.”
That resounding hallelujah chorus you heard was the Android world rejoicing that the last main talking point that the iPhone had will soon be knocked down.
This is a software fix, meaning that this could soon be rolled out to the much wider Android ecosystem. Droid owners are assuredly going to be counting down the minutes until they get similar functionality. iPhone users have found it increasingly difficult to outline exact areas that their phone surpassed Android; today, one more is gone.

Except Apple owns the patents and trademarks of 'multitouch'. I dont see this lasting long.
Can't wait, right?
no more hacking for android users to get multi-touch… nice
Sooooo, Google is beating Apple because their phone now does the same thing as the iPhone…. that makes sense!
Nexus: Available in 1 country
iPhone: Available in 77 countries
Please tell me how the hell it's possible for them to beat Apple (in sales)?
Please tell me what the Nexus does that the iPhone doesn't and please don't start with the open source BS, everybody knows that the average consumer (those who actually help these companies to make profit) does not care a second about OPEN SOURCE and things like that.
Oh and BTW “iPhone users have found it increasingly difficult to outline exact areas that their phone surpassed Android; today, one more is gone.”
The truth: iphones users just dont care about it, they already own a good phone. Anti-apple guys and Google fanboys like you are the only ones who gets in this competition.
Can you outline what Nexus One does and iPhone does not? IMO this is just another Android phone, nothing more, nothing less. So there nothing new and revolutionary since the first Android Phone
Spoken turn by turn as a free app. Native integration with Google Voice. UI customizability. Tethering. Integration with Google services outside of Gmail. Should I continue? For that matter, what did the iPhone do when it debuted that was so much better than windows mobile? My phone could do all the iPhone can still do, and I bought it in 2006.
You are exactly correct about the average consumer. They are looking for a phone that works out of the box. In general, the iPhone provides that in an attractive package. However, what the tech pundits are trying to say, though not well, is that the barriers between the iPhone and other devices are greatly diminishing. The Nexus One and Android is proving to be a very good alternative to those who cannot get/do not want an iPhone, and these kind people are helping to point out that the consumer won't be missing much, if anything. But can you tell me what the iPhone can do so well that the Nexus One can't?
I own an iPhone 3Gs and a Dev1 (the first Android based device – developer version of the G1), and although I love the iPhone as a gadget, the usability of the Dev1 is much higher in terms of phone functionality. It's easier to get where you want to go.
The iPhone is great as a play toy – it's got good, high paced games which haven't happened (and probably won't for a while) on any Android based phone – least of all, my Dev1, but no multi-tasking??? I had that happening on my computer in the late 80s (and the processor's in any of the devices these days are thousands of times faster, not to mention the speed and amount of RAM).
I've got an early cooked ROM on my dev1 now, so have (very limited) multitouch… once it comes from Google directly, I'm sure it'll be a lot better and be well integrated with all apps (I've only got it running on the browser and picture app so far).
The main thing I dislike about the iPhone is that you need iTunes (which I think is one of the most badly written programs ever) to even activate the (factory unlocked) phone!
And contrary to what I believed before I got it, the iPhone is NOT a stable device… my old WinMo TYTN II was a little less buggy – and that was with me running quite a few apps at the same time.
“The Nexus One is available for purchase in the United States and may also be shipped to the UK, Hong Kong, and Singapore (Republic of Singapore).”
We're really talking about the Android OS here, it just so happens the Nexus One will benefit first. If you take all phones running Android – the availability of this will soon be much much bigger.
Google is probably willing to take apple to court to 'test' the patent and in the process draw attention to Nexus One.
MR jfdube,
I am an iphone user in India. I have an iphone3g. As you mention above”Please tell me what the Nexus does that the iPhone doesn't …….” Umm i feel the iphone is like one of the worst phones ever…
It doesnt even posses features a Rs 5,000(approx. 100$) phone would posses. A 2 MP camera… maybe a iPhone user like you would be contended with that….. i can't forward sms.. the Bluetooth is next to useless as it can't do anything except maybe connect to a very few number of headsets ….
IT DOESNT EVEN HAVE A VIDEO CAMERA. Now obviously your lame counter argument will be the '3gs', so before you can state that i would like you to recheck it's availability in other countries. After you have done this research you shall get an epiphany that it is not available everywhere..
And dear jfdube if will so kind as to notice , iphone maps are powered by 'Google”. And iphone users LIKE ME AND HUNDRED OTHERS LIKE ME FEEL IT'S HIGH TIME APPLE SHOULD LAUNCH SOME GOOD SHIT. So you please go around to your little apple fanclub and be satisfied with your phone.
But it is true apart from some major flaws the iphone is a pretty good phone. In this aspect i like my itouch much more.
As i conclude i would first like to apologize to all people i have intentionally or unintentionally hurt, but i would like to say the iphone is good but that doesn;t mean you start insulting other things.MR jfdube,

the simple fact is iPhone is the best. I have used all the other touch screen phones… they are slow, hard to use, not intuitive and Windows mobile makes me want to scream just looking at the confusing s#@t everywhere. hard to push buttons and doesn't sync the way my iphone does with itunes. I hate everything about windows media player because it just plain sucks. people who like it better than iTunes, i have found, are usually idiots. I came name 4 people i know right now who like it better. Everyone can hate apple but numbers speak not idiots who want to make themselves feel cool about owning a second rate phone. The only prob with iPhone is AT&T
IPhone as great as the game play – it is got good games and a high tempo, which did not happen (and probably will for some time) on any phone based on Android – at least of everything, I had to occur on my computer in the late 80s (and the processor in any of the devices these days are thousands of times faster, not to mention the speed and amount of RAM).
