Microsoft quietly stops taking Surface Pro 2 orders via its online store

It seems Microsoft has quietly retired the Surface Pro 2. As Neowin reports, the laptop-tablet hybrid is no longer available to purchase through Microsoft’s online store, signalling that the device has finally reached the end of its lifespan.

While the Surface Pro 2 is still listed with its usual product page, hitting the “Buy Now” button in the US leads to a dead link. Similarly, visitors in the UK are being redirected to the homepage of Microsoft’s online store.

The Pro 3 is, without question, superior to the Pro 2. Microsoft has been offering the latter as a cheaper alternative – but given its sustained marketing push behind the refined Pro 3, it’s hardly surprising to see the older model disappear.

If you’re still interested in a Surface Pro 2, there’s a good chance that third-party retailers are still carrying some stock. Should the device be available to purchase once more from Microsoft’s store, we’ll be sure to let you know – otherwise, it’s time to say goodbye to the company’s second attempt at combining a tablet and laptop form factor with the full power of Windows 8.
