Rdio matches Spotify by lowering the price of its family subscription plan to $5 for each extra member

Less than a month after Spotify announced it was introducing family subscription plans, Rdio has revealed that it’s lowering the price of its own family plans to $5 for each extra subscriber.

Rdio was one of the first music-streaming service to launch family subscription plans, way back in 2011. It was initially restricted to 3 family members, but was subsequently extended to five last year. The upshot of the family plan meant you no longer had to pay the full $9.99 for each member – two accounts cost $17.99 per month, while three would set the main subscriber back $22.99.

Now, however, a family of two will only pay $14.99, which effectively means the second member gets a subscription for half-price. The family pricing tiers are now as follows:

  • Family of 2 = $14.99
  • Family of 3 = $19.99
  • Family of 4 = $24.99
  • Family of 5 = $29.99

If you’re wondering why a family can’t just share a single subscription between multiple people anyway, well, they can – except music can only be played back on one device at any given time. With a family subscription, all members can listen to what they want whenever they want. And they can create their own playlists too.

Family subscription plans were a key differentiator for Rdio before Spotify followed suit last month with lower pricing in tow. With today’s move, this means that Rdio’s prices are now in line with Spotify. Oh, and it still has Taylor Swift in its arsenal too.
