From the same country that’s blocked access to Twitter, Facebook and all sorts of social networking comes an online first: Internet grocery shopping.
Meydoonak.com is the first online grocery store in Iran offering 2,500 grocery and household items at competitive prices.
Founded by a state-linked technology group, Meydoonak.com will initially cover Tehran and operate from 8 am till midnight except on Fridays, the Islamic holy day. The founding technology group Rouyesh Technical Centre seems to be involved in other equally interesting projects, including animal cloning!
Grocery or not, it’s a positive step towards embracing the Internet, albeit via e-shopping.
It’s no surprise that there’s no user-generated comments or feedback on the website. Iran is after all rated amongst the world’s 13 worst enemies of the Internet according to Reporters Without Borders.
