iPhone 4.0 OS includes background location

iPhone 4.0 OS includes background location

As part of the major announcement that multitasking is coming to the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, Apple just announced that the new OS will include background location, which could be a major game changer for social location services. Here are the main points that Apple mentioned:

  • Two uses: turn-by-turn navigation & social location services
  • GPS uses a lot of battery power
  • “Fine grain” privacy settings, including a status bar that tells you if an app is asking for your location
  • Uses GPS for turn-by-turn and cell tower triangulation for social location services (presumably with the help of the carrier, in this case AT&T)
