With airport Wi-Fi typically slow, the chances of downloading a movie before your flight boards is slim. Download service Digiboo wants to change that, and is placing Digiboo Zones in airports for ultra-fast TV and movie rental downloads.
Digiboo Zones is app-based, and requires that you find a Redbox-esque kiosk; the service is positioned for airports, but the kiosks will be found at various high-traffic locations like universities. Once you find the title you’d like to download, Digiboo says the kiosk can feed a 1GB file to your mobile device in about three minutes.
Downloads are done via Wi-Fi, so the kiosks are really just dedicated hubs for wireless media downloads. Movies are usually priced at $4.99 for new releases and $3.99 for older titles.
Once a download completes, you have 48 hours to view it, but let’s be honest — you’re going to start watching once you get to cruising altitude.
Digiboo Zones are being placed in 100 locations across the US and Canada today, with a planned rollout of 2,000 kiosks over the next 12 months.
The Digiboo Zones app is available for iOS and Android, but direct purchasing is only supported for iOS; Android users can purchase movies at a kiosk.
