Cisco acquires cloud security company OpenDNS for $635 million

Cisco is acquiring online security firm OpenDNS for $635 million in cash.

OpenDNS provides a popular free alternative DNS service along with business security solutions.

Cisco said that the “acquisition will extend [its] ability to provide customers enhanced visibility and threat protection for unmonitored and potentially unsecure entry points into the network, and to quickly and efficiently deploy and integrate these capabilities as part of their defense architecture.”

David Ulevitch, founder and CEO of OpenDNS, reassured customers that the service will continue to work as it does today and that Cisco agrees the existing “level of service for all users is a priority.”

The acquisition is expected to complete in 2016 and the OpenDNS team will join the Cisco Security Business Group.
