While many startups pay close attention to their own blogs in the name of ‘content marketing’, you don’t often hear about many actually acquiring a blog. That’s what’s happened in the case of Infrogr.am, however.

The creator of the popular infographic-creation platform has bought Visualoop, a Brazil-based blog covering the data visualization scene. The unusual move won’t see the blog become one giant ad for Infogr.am, however – Visualoop will maintain editorial independence.

For Infogr.am’s Latvia-based CEO Uldis Leiterts, this deal is part of the startup’s aim to promote “long-term data literacy.” Much the same way that Google and Facebook want to get as many new people online as possible in order to expand their businesses, Infogr.am sees growth in awareness of data visualization as a way to expand its user base.

This deal follows the recent launch of Infogram.org, a non-profit entity charged with promoting data literacy around the world.

Infogr.am won Best Startup at TNW Conference Europe last year.
