Google Docs makes it easier to edit Office files from Gmail, adds support for 15 new file types

As popular as Google Docs is, Office remains the dominant suite of productivity apps. Google knows this, so it’s making it a bit easier to work with Office files with some new updates.

Now, you can start editing Office files right from Gmail – you’ll see a new edit icon on attachments. Once you click it, Google will automatically open the file in the relevant web app.

Whereas before you’d have to first save the file to your Drive if you wanted to keep making changes to it, you can now access it anytime from either the email containing the attachment, or Google Docs.

The company is also announcing support for 15 new Office file types, including presentation show files (pps, ppsx), templates, and more. Google notes the update brings improved support for charts, images and tables.

These are small but useful changes as Google tries make its products more competitive with Office for power-users.
