Microsoft taps Skype to bring real-time chats to Office Online

One of the best things about cloud-based apps is their ability to enable online collaboration. Today, Microsoft announced it is tapping into Skype to make working with others on Office Online more seamless.

In an update rolling out over the coming weeks, Word or PowerPoint users can start collaborating with someone by simply clicking the ‘Chat’ button.

Once you’re done working on a document, you can continue chatting through Skype on the desktop or your mobile device.

This is similar to what Google offers with Hangouts while using Google Docs, so it’s nice to see Microsoft adding some competitive functionality to Office Online.
