Meanwhile, T-Mobile’s overall customer base has grown to more than 50 million. CEO John Legere tweeted that he expects his company to over take Sprint in terms of total subscribers by the end of this year.

MetroPCS, which T-Mobile acquired last year, played a big part in taking the lead. The brand picked up 1.2 million new subscribers over the past year.

The announcement comes just a day after reports emerged that Sprint is calling off an acquisition bid for T-Mobile.
