Disqus adds embed support for YouTube videos, GIFs, tweets, and other rich media into comments

Commenting platform Disqus has added rich media support to its service, enabling users to express their thoughts in more ways than just text. With its Embedded Rich Media offering, any Disqus-powered article can now include videos from YouTube or Vimeo, GIFs and memes, Soundcloud songs and playlists, and tweets.

Originally framed as a commenting service, Disqus has evolved to become a community supporting more than 125 million people everyday with over 3 million sites using it. The company tells us that only 1 percent of comments had featured media prior to today and in its early beta testing, that percentage jumped to 7 percent.

Publishers that want to enable readers to post rich media need only to make a simple change in their Disqus settings.

Once on supported sites, commenters need only copy the rich media file’s URL and paste it into the dialogue box. Disqus will pull the image or video and embed it into the comment field. Those reading what’s posted can, they can turn off the rich media as well, but the change will be restricted to that specific page.
