Amazon says it’s not launching a phone this year, and when it does it won’t be free

Amazon has refuted a report made last week claiming that it was looking into giving away an own-brand smartphone without a contract. A company spokesperson issued a statement saying that Amazon isn’t going to be releasing a phone this year and if it does, it “would not be free”.

On Friday, JessicaLessin.com reported that the online retail giant was investigating ways to provide a branded unlocked phone to anyone, which most likely will be a serious threat to manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, and LG.
