Bloomberg: Amazon has tested a wireless network in Cupertino

Bloomberg is reporting that Amazon has tested a wireless network in rival Apple’s hometown of Cupertino, California.

According to the report, Amazon tapped satellite phone company Globalstar for the test. Globalstar is currently in the process of working with the FCC to have its mobile satellite spectrum repurposed for terrestrial use.

Though Amazon’s headquarters are in Seattle, Washington, its Lab 126 R&D subsidiary operates in Cupertino. Amazon’s intentions behind the test aren’t immediately clear, as it has a broad range of services beyond e-commerce, such as content delivery (WhisperNet) and cloud computing (AWS). Rumors of an Amazon-developed smartphone have also existed for some time.
