Uber noted today in a blog post that it is experiencing a regulatory setback in Washington DC with the UberX program it recently launched there. The District of Columbia Taxi Commission (DCTC) is effectively outlawing the use of small and mid-sized vehicles UberX because they represent unfair competition to taxi services.
UberX arrived in DC in early August, and quickly drew the attention of the commission. The new regulations will use EPA categories, such as “Luxury Sedan,” “Upscale Sedan,” and “Sport Utility Vehicle”, to define which cars are eligible for hire.
The company maintains that it only launches products that are legal in their respective regions, but it still has found itself party to numerous disagreements with regulators.
